The Richelieu River, which was used in the past as a trade route and for Amerindian migrations and military purposes, played an important role in the history and development of the Montérégie region, as well as Quebec and the whole of America.

In recognition of its historic importance, the Richelieu tourist route was created and officially inaugurated in 2012.  Covering 265 km, the Route du Richelieu runs along both shores of the Richelieu River on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border, from Lacolle to the St. Lawrence River in Sorel-Tracy.

The route can be followed on both sides of the border between the province of Quebec and the state of New York, highlighting major historical moments in the development of the United States and Canada.  Home to bucolic landscapes of exceptional beauty, the river’s surroundings teem with true natural, cultural, heritage and historic treasures.

All along the way, country landscapes, shorelines and urban settings welcome you to discover key historical facts about Quebec. Not to mention all the archaeological excavation sites, historic sites and villages teeming with history. The route also features many sites dedicated to leisure and boating activities.
